The Pilates technique is a form of body conditioning which emphasizes muscular balance, strength with flexibility, as well as postural improvement and neuro-muscular re-patterning. It is an ideal form of exercise for people suffering from back problems due to the emphasis on core stabilization. It is also suitable for post rehabilitation, post-natal, postural realignment, and chronic pain relief.

All of our instructors are certified in STOTT PILATES®. We concentrate on safety, good technique, form and individual progress. STOTT PILATES  was created by Moira Merrithew, the Program Director of STOTT PILATES® STUDIO. She studied the Pilates method in New York City with Romana Kryzanowska at the studio that Joseph Pilates originated.

The STOTT PILATES method of exercise involves more initial pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization exercises than in the original Pilates Method. We incorporate extension of the spine earlier while emphasizing the stabilization and support of the scapula and the pelvic area as the movement is performed. This is a progressive approach and reflects current thinking about the body and how it functions.

We begin by working with our clients on a one-to-one basis and create an awareness of the deep torso muscles. Once this has been accomplished, we work with the client to re-pattern any muscular-skeletal imbalances which might exist: we reintegrate the body. The series of exercises are structured in such a way as to balance strength with flexibility: the demands on the neuro-muscular system increase as the exercises increase in difficulty. The exercises are performed both on the floor and on specifically designed pieces of equipment that allow for this progression of movement patterns.

When performed consistently, the STOTT PILATES method helps to establish core control in movement sequences and functional and complex actions. It increases the range of motion of the joints with greater strength and coordination throughout.
